Each year, I give out an award for the best health oriented motion picture of the year (the HOME award) to a single film that illustrates an important message for patients and their families. On the red carpet at a satellite dinner during the Oscar Academy Awards, I will present the 2017 award to “The Big Sick”, and it will be accepted by one of its stars Shana Solomon who played the role of “Nurse Betty”. The film illustrates the importance of a health care team (patient, spouse, friend, family, doctors and nurses) in surviving a life threatening illness. Nurses play an important role, as illustrated in the film, in communication and supporting the patient and family in dealing with life or death decisions.
Press releases have appeared in over 450 news outlets in America as well as Canada, England, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, New Zealand, France, Germany and South Africa. An example of the press release is https://chicagoeveningpost.com/2018/02/26/the-big-sick-star-shana-solomon-receives-home-award-from-dr-cary-presant/ and gives tips to patients on dealing with serious illnesses, as so well portrayed in the film.
